Frequently asked questions about the thesis
Note: the following information is meant to give you a general idea of the process you need to go through once you finish writing your thesis until the day of your defense. It is also important to set up a meeting with Gemma Barea in Secretaria so that you go through all the steps with her. It is also important that once you finish your thesis, you inform the coordinator of the program so that s/he is aware of it.
Some of the information provided below comes from a document that regulates all PhD programs at the University of Barcelona (Normativa reguladora del doctorat a la Universitat de Barcelona last updated in 15/10/2013). References to the different sections in that document are made in most of the answers.
Once I finish writing my thesis, what is the first step?
You need to fill in (1) a form (‘sol·licitud d’autorització per depositar la tesi doctoral’) and register it in ‘Secretaria’ together with: (2) a copy of your thesis (not a provisional copy), (3) an authorization form from the supervisor(s) /tutor and (4) two CDs (one CD with your thesis and cv and a second CD with your thesis and abstract (English abstract 600 words, Spanish/Catalan abstract 350 words). You will also need to (5) fill in an additional form (publication and personal data). You will be able to get the forms from: http://www.ub.edu/filologia/doctorat/elaboracio_tesi.htm (see section called ‘dipòsit de la tesi doctoral)
Your supervisor is also expected to tell the coordinator of our program who will be in your evaluation committee (3 lecturers + 2 substitute lecturers). The program coordinator will need this information to complete a form. The CVs of all lecturers need to be attached to this form. See more information in ‘article 35’.
What is the estimated time between the registration of the thesis (first step) and defending it?
Less than 3 months.
When is the latest date for me to ‘deposit’ the thesis so that I do not need to pay the registration fees for the following academic year?
The 30th of September.
After the Committee of the program authorizes my thesis, what happens next?
The thesis needs to be approved by the Filologia Doctoral Committee, which meets once a month. The exact dates of these meetings are known one month in advance but not before. The coordinator of our program is the person who will inform you of these dates. In any case, there needs to be a period of at least 7 working days between the PhD program authorization and the Filologia Doctoral Committee’s meeting. See more information in ‘article 39’.
Now that my thesis has been approved by the Filologia PhD committee, when can I plan to defend my thesis?
Once your thesis has been approved by this committee, you will be notified, and then you will be asked to take three copies of your thesis to the Secretaria together with five copies of your CV. The University will then send the copies directly to the members of the evaluation board. To decide the date of your thesis defense, you need to give a reasonable amount of time for the thesis to be sent and read by the members of the evaluation committee.
Is there a budget to invite lecturers from outside Catalonia as members of the board?
Yes, the Facultat de Filologia has a budget for that (600 € per thesis). In the case of a thesis with an international qualification, the amount is 900€ . It can cover a maximum of two nights per person.
